Laos PDR, famous as a mega bio-diverse country, is at a crossroad since its recent opening policy for foreign investors. With its small population and rich natural resources, Laos offers attractive investments to global players, because they are starved for natural resources. In the North, rubber is being planted at one of the fastest rates in Asia. The problem is two-fold: people don’t really understand the importance of biodiversity and the government is giving away land concessions to rubber, cassava, or eucalyptus… With growing awareness of the immense value of these natural resources, many people are asking: can Laos protect its remarkable natural wealth as it heads towards economic development?
